I remember the day my therapist told me I was a chronic worrier. My reaction? A what!?!? You mean there is a name for the craziness in my head?
Everyone worries, it is a natural reaction. According to Dr. Hallowell, “While a healthy level of worry can help us perform efficiently at work, anticipate dangers, and learn from past errors, in its extreme forms worry can become “toxic”–poisoning our pleasures, sabotaging our achievements, and preventing us from resolving actual problems.” (source website)
Before I started therapy, my worry took on a life of its own and it was often paralyzing. It affected my daily life and often overpowered my ability to think rationally. Often, worrying would upset me and lead to a panic attack. The worry was sometimes so severe, I would become paralyzed in fear.
Thanks to therapy I was able to learn great techniques to conquer my fear and learn how to minimize the impact they caused. Another great tool in overcoming my worry was the book “Worry” by Dr. Hallowell. The book is a great resource that explains worry and why we worry. It also explains why some people are chronic worriers. The author provides case stories of patients that explore different worry scenarios and the tools they use to cope. At the end of the book is an invaluable resource section that shows the readers how to evaluate, control, and manage worry, both with and without medication.
I recommend this book to anyone that is a worrier or loves someone that is a worrier.
