There are many small cross body bags to wear with just a few basics like your wallet, hand sanitizer, phone and such. You can also find much larger cross body totes that are handy for keeping more things if needed.
Don’t tell strangers you are alone. When you meet new people on the road, don’t mention you are traveling alone. Unless you tell them specifically, many people will assume you are with family or friends. Practice stranger danger just like you have taught your children.
Stay in well lit areas. When out and about at your destination, make sure you are in well lit areas after dark. If that means waiting inside a store while you wait for a bus to arrive, or avoiding certain parts of town after dark it is your safest bet.
Research hotel safety. Before booking your room, research the reviews and area around the hotel to make sure it too is well lit and safe. That means you want to look for hotels that are family friendly, have proper security options and are in a safe part of town.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash on your person. When paying for things as you travel, having a large amount of cash visible can make you a target for a predator. Separate your cash into smaller amounts in different parts of your wallet so you can pull out just what you need without exposing the extra money you have on hand. You may also want to invest in a pre-paid debit card for travel to protect your regular banking account should you lose it.
Limit your luggage so you aren’t distracted carrying more than you can handle. When you are trying to juggle your purse, carry on and several large suitcases while traveling you can easily be distracted and unable to manage everything. Limit what you carry so you always have at least one hand free.
Never invite someone to your room that you don’t already know. Don’t invite a man or woman to your room that you don’t already know. Be careful and safe using locks and precautions so even if someone followed you, you know you are protected.
