The New Year is finally here and it’s time to start reflecting on the old and planning the new! Most people set New Year’s resolutions, and of course, tons of people break them. The question is: how can you pick a great New Year’s resolution that you can actually stick to and follow through with? These tips should help you in picking a great New Year’s resolution, and hopefully one that will make a huge positive change in your life!
1. Find something that’s extremely important to you.
This is the biggest step to picking a great New Year’s resolution, and by far the most important. Picking a New Year’s resolution that you don’t really care about helps nobody, so make sure to sit down and evaluate what is really important to YOU! Lots of people make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, but if that isn’t your primary focus right now, pick something else! Maybe you want to save money for a vacation this year, or start a savings account to fall back on. Either way, it’s important to decide right now what you want your New Year’s resolution to be!
2. Set up a game plan to stick with your New Year’s resolution.
If your plan is to save money for a vacation, how will you achieve that goal? First, set an “end game” amount to save. If you want to save $1,000, how long will it take you to save that much? If you plan to save it all this year, divide it up and see how much you’ll need to set aside each month to make this a reality! If you want to take it a step further, have your paycheck set up at work to automatically take the money out each month and put it in a savings account so you won’t touch it or even be tempted to! If you have a different goal, take similar steps to create a plan of action that you can follow.
3. Make a promise to yourself that means something.
It’s very easy to get caught up in New Year’s bliss and set all kinds of resolutions and forget about them weeks or even days later. Again, going back to the vacation money resolution, make sure it matters to you. Maybe use the vacation money to take a couple’s retreat and strengthen your relationship. As long as you have a reward at the end that makes your New Year’s resolution worthwhile, your chances of being successful are much higher. Make a promise to yourself and display it. Tell all your friends to keep you accountable, write it down and hang it up somewhere you can see it everyday, and stick to it!
What kinds of New Year’s resolutions have you made? Will you take steps like this to make sure you achieve your goal?
